Today is National Walking Day – a day designated to encourage people to get out and walk in their neighborhoods and communities. Trees are an important part of making those communities walkable.
A ten-year study in Melbourne, Australia has found that the overall health of residents of new housing developments improved when their daily walking increased as a result of more access to parks, public transport, shops, and services. The study shows how local infrastructure, like trees, can support healthy behaviors.
