This project is all about planting shade trees on the campus of Brentwood Academy in East Palo Alto to create a healthier environment for the 500 kids (K to 5th) served by this public school. East Palo Alto is one of the most underprivileged communities in the Bay area. Its demographic, economic, education and public health indicators are in stark contrast to those of the neighboring Silicon Valley communities. The city has one of the sparsest urban forests and the school campuses are particularly barren and suffer from a severe lack of shade. Brentwood was chosen because it is characterized by extensive asphalt and open fields with very few trees to mitigate the heat and UV rays.
