Trees bring life to California and have a remarkable effect on our communities. Trees provide benefits like cleaning the air and cooling hot streets, trees are linked to reduced crime and increased property values. California ReLeaf works hand in hand with local organizations throughout the state to preserve, protect, and enhance California’s community forests.

A donation to California ReLeaf is a gift to the citizen’s of California for generations to come. Consider supporting us this holiday season and invest in California! As a special bonus, all donations of $100 or more between now and December 31, 2011 will receive a copy of A Californian’s Guide to the Trees Among Us as a special gift.

This year, California will provide the Capitol Christmas Tree, which will be displayed in Washington, DC throughout the 2011 Christmas season. A 60 foot tree will be coming from the Stanislaus National Forest. The tree, a gift to the nation from California’s “Range of Light”, symbolizes the theme: “California Shines” and will serve as the holiday centerpiece on the Capitol Lawn.

Californians will provide 7,000 handmade ornaments to adorn the Capitol tree and approximately 100 smaller trees that will be used to decorate offices throughout the Washington D.C. area. You can help create both large and small ornaments! Anyone can participate- Individuals, school classes, youth clubs, art councils, civic organizations and all other interested youth and adult groups.

The ornaments will showcase the theme, “California Shines”, and all that is special about California ‐ the Pacific Ocean to the sparkling deserts, the high mountain peaks to its forests, rivers and abundant Central Valley, the diversity of nature and the people who live here are what make the great state of California shine.

Please visit www.capitolchristmastree2011.org for specific ornament criteria for indoor and outdoor trees and to find out more information about the annual Capitol Christmas Tree project, the details of California’s 2011 effort, and the many partners and sponsors who are working together to coordinate this effort.

Assemblymember Roger Dickinson, representing the 9th District, introduced Assembly Concurrent Resolution 10 (ACR 10) to officially designate March 7-14 as California Arbor Week. ACR 10 urges California residents to observe March 7-14 each year as California Arbor Week. Trees are a vital resource to to our communities and serve as an important link with nature for California’s residents.

March 7 – 14 is California Arbor Week. Urban and community forests play a vital role in our lives. They filter rainwater and store carbon. They feed and shelter birds and other wildlife. They shade and cool our homes and neighborhoods, saving energy. Maybe best of all, they form a living green canopy, contributing to our health and well-being, raising our quality of life.

This March you have a chance to get involved in your own neighborhood forest. California Arbor Week is a time to plant trees, volunteer in your community, and learn about the forest where you live. By planting trees in your own yard, caring for trees in your local parks, or attending a community greening workshop, you can make a difference.

For more information, or to find an event near you, please visit www.arborweek.org
